Jade a seven year old girl from South Korea is in the spotlight of a major dispute. People are outraged at a Dutch diplomat accused of ditching his adopted child. Raymond Poeteray a Dutch consular officer recently returned his child to Hong Kong social services claiming she wasn't adjusting. Poeteray and his wife said they acted on medical advice, he said that a doctor told them she had bonding problems. He also stated that Jade was not able to adjust to life in Holland and their culture. His actions raise many questions from people around the world, some even dislike the idea of people adopting children from other places and that they should be raised in their own birth country. Mr. Poeteray and his wife Meta are under a lot of fire, but he does insist that by the middle of last year doctors were urging him to put Jade in medical care.
Many angry citizens added their input on the subject on the De Telegraaf website.
“Of course a child that has been given away for adoption is going to have a
fear of emotional bonding!” said Anna, from Lelystad, on the De Telegraaf
website.
Another said: “What would they have done if their own children had
been sick? Would they have given them away? This man is sick himself – can’t he
be given away?
The Dutch Foreign Ministry stands by him but many others believe he should step down from politics altogether and that he has embarrassed his family enough.
Moral of the story: Next time you feel like staying home with a cold, don't tell your parents or they might just give you away.
